Expiry dates are easy to forget because they come round so rarely. The fix is to note them once, for everyone in the house, with a renew-by date.
How long passports last
| Country | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 10 years | 5 years |
| US | 10 years | 5 years (under 16) |
| Canada | 10 years (or 5, if you chose it) | 5 years |
| Australia | 10 years | 5 years (under 16) |
Renew early. Some countries require up to 6 months left on your passport to let you in, and renewals take time, so check yours about 9 months before it expires, and well before booking a trip.
Driving licences
- UK: the photocard has to be renewed every 10 years. Driving on an expired one can mean a fine of up to £1,000.
- US, Canada and Australia: how long a licence lasts depends on your state, province or territory, so check the date on yours.
