Many shops start their "Black Friday" sales weeks earlier, so the run-up matters as much as the day.
How to spot a fake Black Friday deal
- Write down the price before the sales. Check what you want now and a few times in November. If the sale price isn't lower than what you've already seen, it isn't a deal.
- Look at the price history. For Amazon, CamelCamelCamel and Keepa show past prices; in the UK, PriceSpy covers many shops.
- Don't trust the "was" price. A big crossed-out price only tells you what the shop charged at some point, not what you'd normally pay.
- Set a target price. Decide the most you'll pay before the day, so a countdown timer can't decide for you.
- Check the return policy. Sale items sometimes have shorter return windows. Note the last return day as soon as your order arrives.
